Personal Gear:

  • Backpack: One internal frame backpack that is 60-80 Liters (we can borrow you one of ours in a pinch).

  • Day pack: A light pack that is capable of holding lunch, rain jacket, and water bottle.

  • (1) Pack cover: Waterproof cover for the pack.

  • (3-4) Small stuff sacks or freezer ziplocs for organizing stuff.

Footwear:

Backpackers are required to bring at least two pairs of shoes on-trail that fully enclose the feet. One of those pairs must provide adequate ankle support and is to be worn while hiking. The other should have a durable sole that would provide enough support in the event they were needed to hike in.

  • Hiking boots: These can be all leather or a combination of leather and fabric. They should provide good support and have a sole with good traction. Try on lots of boots and purchase them a couple of months ahead of the trip so you have time to break them in.

  • Camp Shoes: Something lightweight and comfortable to wear at the end of the day. Must be close-toed shoes to protect your feet. (Croc's work extremely well)

  • Socks: 2-3 pairs of wool or wool-blend socks. Choose a weight and style that works with your boots. Crew length works well with hiking boots.

    • Liner socks are an option if these provide the right blister protection though the design of modern wool socks may deem them unnecessary.

  • Gaiters: (optional) These work well to keep mud, crud, and some water out of your boots. Heavyweight gaiters will be too warm for a summer trip. Outdoor Research, Black Diamond and Mountain Hardwear are good brands.

Upper Body Clothing:

  • (2-3)  T-shirts, either synthetic or merino wool. An extra cotton shirt for sleeping is okay.

  • (1)  Long-sleeved light fleece or heavier weight long underwear shirt or button-down nylon shirt.

  • (1)  Lightweight insulated jacket: Down or synthetic.

  • (1)  Rain jacket: breathable and large enough to fit over layers.

Lower Body Clothing:

  • (1-2) pairs of Nylon pants or other synthetic quick-dry: Zip-off style is convenient.

  • (1) pair of breathable rain pants.

Be sure to check with your personal physician if our trips are for you. In some instances, you will be hiking at a high elevation, and will be required to carry a limited amount of weight in a backpack (up to 35-40 pounds) for extended periods of time. There will be frequent water breaks and rests to assess personal well-being, but the group will be required to hike up to 6 -8 miles on certain days.

The trip will be supported by wilderness medicine trained facilitators, but individuals must arrive for the experience in good physical shape and must not view this experience as an opportunity to “get in shape.” Peak experiences happen through peak preparation.
